Songs from Spoon River

Five short films by Paula Downes with music by Andrew Downes & poetry by Edgar Lee Masters

Paula Downes completed her first set of short films, Songs from Spoon River, in April 2009.  A visual realization of musical imagery, it combines ocular narrative with a song cycle composed by her father, Andrew Downes.  Songs from Spoon River for soprano and piano is a setting of five poems from Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology.  Each poem is narrated by a different ghost who tells of her former life as if reciting her own epitaph from the grave.  A fusion of three elements, the film interprets the song cycle, just as the song cycle interprets the poetry. Paula released these films between December 2009 and June, 2010. Watch the films below.
